Shiites shun proscription, protest in Abuja
The Islamic Movement of Nigeria a.k.a Shiites, on Friday took to the streets of Abuja to stage a peaceful protest .
Members of the group were seen in the Utako area of the FCT despite the proscription of their activities in Nigeria.
The protesting Shi’ites who carried banner and placard were demanding the unconditional release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky as well as his wife Zeenat.
El-Zakzaky has been in detention of the Department of State Service since December 2015 after members of his sect clashed with men of the Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna state.
The federal government In July, proscribed the activities of the sect following a deadly clash between them and the Police.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, FCT Command, DCP Usman A.K Umar and a Corps member serving with Channels TV, Precious Owolabi, lost their lives during that clash.
