A Driver with a new generation bank, Nureni Olawale, 27, was on Tuesday, arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly driving recklessly and damaging an SUV worth N26.7 million.
The driver whose residential address was not given, is facing trial on a five-count charge bordering on reckless driving, bodily harm, unlawful damage and obstruction preferred against him by the police.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Mawari Solomon, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences on Feb.16 at 6:30 a.m., at Bourdillion Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Solomon told the court that Olawale, a driver in charge of a Toyota Land Cruiser, with registration no. BDG 881 AC, drove same, recklessly and dangerously on the public high way.
He said that Olawale drove his car in the direction prohibited by the road traffic law and caused injury to one Mr Richard Alabi.
According to him, the defendant, while taking one way, damaged one Mercedes Benz G-Wagon marked, ARK 10 DC, worth N26.7 million, property of the complainant, Alabi.
Solomon told the court that the offences contravened Sections 19, (1), 27 schedule 1, 29 and 45 of the road traffic law of Lagos State, 2012.
However the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The defendant’s lawyer, Mr U.N. Ezeokeke, urged the court to grant the defendant bail on liberal terms.
In her ruling, Magistrate Mrs A.A. Famobiwo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of the performance of their civic responsibilities.
The case was adjourned until March 19, for mention.
