The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has directed that foreign exchange (FOREX) will no longer be made available for importation of hand sanitisers from China or any foreign country.
Emefiele gave the directive on Wednesday during a Consultative Roundtable dubbed ‘Going for Growth 2.0’, where he gave assurance that sanitisers will be included in the list of Forex banned items.
At the moment, the CBN has imposed a ban on 41 products which could be produced in the country. The list will increase to 42 with the inclusion of hand sanitisers.
Mr. Emefiele took the decision after a participant at the event, Mrs. Stella Okolie, founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, during a question and answer session lamented that her company has a large stock of hand sanitisers in its warehouses, but government agencies continue to promote importation of the product from China and other countries.
The governor reacting to Mrs Okolie’s complaint immediately ordered that only made in Nigeria hand sanitisers will be patronized, stress g that the apex bank will assist pharmaceutical firms to involve in the cure for coronavirus.
He also urged other pharmaceutical firms to go into large scale production of the product.
The Consultative Roundtable which held at the CBN auditorium was attended by dignitaries, including world richest black man, Aliko Dangote, Jim Ovia, Tony Elumelu as well as some federal ministers and heads of agencies.
