Rotary International Club has been called upon to take up the campaign to eradicate corruption in Nigeria, similar to its eradication of polio.
Chief Godwin Odibo made the call in his remarks as chairman, during the Investiture and Fundraising ceremony of the 2nd President of the Rotary Club of Abuja Municipal District 9125, Rotn. Nwankwo Tochukwu, over the weekend.
Odibo who was represented by Dr. Akin Orimolade, urged the Rotary Club to deploy the same strategy it used to kick out polio from Nigeria, to kick out corruption, saying that corruption is the greatest challenge facing the country at the moment.
According to him, the club should take up the campaign to rid Nigeria of corruption by embarking on anti-corruption crusades among the youths of the country.
“Kick corruption out of Nigeria. Take the campaign to NYSC camps and universities to preach the message of anti-corruption so that the future of this country will be brighter. Use the club’s four way test to promote integrity among the youths and the country’s leadership,” Odibo said.
In his acceptance speech as 2nd president, Rotn. Nwankwo expressed delight at the opportunity to lead the club and serve humanity within the period of one Rotary year.
He pledged his readiness to execute projects in the club’s six areas of focus including: Peace and Conflict prevention and resolution, Disease prevention and treatment, Water Sanitation, Maternal and Child health, Basic Education and Literacy and Economic and Community Development.
Tochukwu urged his members and the newly inducted ones to “join in connecting the world and contribute their time, talent and treasures in making the world a better place in.
The guest speaker at the event, Mr. Otobo Osmond delivered a paper on Leadership and Service and pointed out that the difference between progressive countries and those that are not making any progress lies squarely on leadership and service.
According to him, two things that have distinguished the Rotary Club and enabled it to make great strides in the society are leadership and service.
“Rotary’s focus and commitment to the noble cause of service and service to humanity is not only exemplary but absolutely legendary. The Rotary has continued to demonstrate unequalled commitment in building bridges across continents, building communities, in servicing humanity, preventing and curing diseases, reforming and redirecting thinking,” he postulated.
The event also witnessed fundraising for the Rotary projects and conferment of awards to some personalities who have distinguished themselves in various areas of endeavours.
