The planned ‘mother of all strike’ by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) may have been nipped in the Bud as the Federal Government has bowed to the pressure of the labour unions.
Labour had threatened to shut down the country if President Muhammadu Buhari failed to transmit the National Minimum Wage Bill which stipulates N30, 000 as the minimum wage for the lowest earning worker.
The Federal Government has finally, fixed January 23rd as the date to transmit the new Minimum Wage Bill to the National Assembly with a view to fast-tracking the implementation of a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, made the disclosure when he had a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and its allies in Abuja January 8th. .
He told the labour leaders that the government will be presenting the recommendations of the tripartite committee to the States Security Council in the coming weeks.
The Labour Unions are demanding that minimum wage of Nigerian workers be increased from N18, 000 to N 30, 000.
