Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Service (DSS), on Friday, moved into a court room to effect the re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore after he was released from their captivity.
The DSS action abruptly cut short the joy of Nigerians who were already celebrating the release of the convener of the RevolutionNow campaign after keeping him in their dungeon for over four months.
The report of Sowore’s re-arrest immediately drew the ire of many Nigerians who took to the social media to vent their disgust for the federal government’s action and disrespect for the law of the land.
Popular columnists J.J Omojuwa who reacted to the development on twitter said, “This is @MBuhari’s legacy. When he is out of power, this will rank as the one thing he’d wish never happened. This is a blatant disregard for the rule of law, order and justice. A government shouldn’t take the law in its hands @ProfOsinbajo this is a shared legacy #FreeSoworeNow .”
Another social commentator, Kayode Ogundamisi tweeted, “Dear President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo. Invading the court premises to re arrest Sowore will go down as one of the low points of this government. It is an embarrassment to those of us who support the government but ultimately a display of misuse of power and lawlessness, to the few sane people in government. It is your duty to protest from within. It’s either you have 5th columnist within the government or the government itself care less about the rule of law. #FreeSowore and others now”.
Chidi Okereke reacted; “You are not safe in Nigeria. All our institutions are in the full control of the executive. You are not safe. If someone like Sowore who is in the public eye, runs a media house and is being represented by the Femi Falana can be treated this way, You are not safe. Get Out!”
Another Nigerian Clara Obiageri tweeted “It’s a good thing a Buhari happened to Nigeria/Nigerians, he would have been tagged, The Saint Nigerians never gave a chance” in the book of history.
