Senate dumps Lauretta Onochie’s nomination as INEC Commissioner

After weeks of sustaining the controversy over the nomination of lauretta Onochie as commissioner by President Muhammadu Buhari the senate has finally put the matter to rest by rejecting her nomination

President Muhammadu Buhari presented the name of his aide, Onochie, a card carrying member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as a national commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) raising a dust that the president was setting the stage for rigging of the 2023 general election

The Nigerian Senate which has never hidden its acquiescence for any request brought by the president left the citizens with no doubt that Onochie nomination would scale through the senate screening.

The senate reached the decision on Tuesday July 13 as it resumed its sitting. This came after a report by the senate committee on INEC, in which it was stated that her nomination breached federal character principle was considered.

Senate committee chairman, Kabir Gaya who cited Section 14 (1) 3 of the constitution, pointed out that someone from her zone is already a commissioner.
