U.S flays FG over Buhari’s Twitter ban, says it scares investors

The United States has flayed the Nigerian government over the ban of the popular social media handle, Twitter, saying it violates the freedom of expression of the citizens.

The U.S Mission in Nigeria on Saturday released a statement in which it said that the action would send a poor message to its citizens, investors and businesses.

Part of the statement read; “Nigeria’s constitution provides for freedom of expression.  The Government’s recent #Twitterban undermines Nigerians’ ability to exercise this fundamental freedom and sends a poor message to its citizens, investors and businesses.

“Banning social media and curbing every citizen’s ability to seek, receive, and impart information undermines fundamental freedoms.

“As President Biden has stated, our need for individual expression, open public conversation, and accountability has never been greater.

“The path to a more secure Nigeria lies in more, not less communication, alongside concerted efforts toward unity, peace, and prosperity. #KeepitOn”

Muhammadu Buhari on Friday ordered the indefinite suspension of the Twitter in Nigeria following Twitter’s pulling down of a tweet by Buhari which evoked the horrible memories of the Nigeria, Biafra civil war.
